In [siccer], Will Rawls considers the ways in which Black bodies are relentlessly documented, distorted, and circulated in the media. This dance performance, presented together with the artist’s exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA), experiments with stop-motion, a filmmaking technique in which still photographs are strung together to produce a moving image. Throughout [siccer]’s live performance, Holland Andrews, keyon gaskin, jess pretty, Katrina Reid, and Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste are suspended in an uncanny reenactment of an iconic American film.

We are incredibly excited to showcase this new series of works from Brent Ozaeta. “Blue Spring” draws its inspiration from the Japanese concept of seishun (青春), a phrase that encapsulates the fleeting beauty & vibrancy of youth. Seishun, literally “blue spring,” symbolizes a time of growth, dreams, & boundless possibility—a season both radiant & transient.

Ozaeta builds fragmented dreamlike vignettes of composited imagery meant to evoke the paradoxical emotions intertwined within this phase of life: beauty laced with impermanence, joy tinged with melancholy. Using layers of texture, delicate color palettes, & nostalgic imagery, Ozaeta seeks to capture the ephemeral nature of moments that slip away like petals carried by the wind.

Join us for reflection, healing, and celebration as we honor the rich musical legacy of Altadena. In the 1960s, driven by discriminatory housing laws, Black families moved to Altadena, where they cultivated a vibrant jazz scene that became a defining part of the community’s cultural fabric. Over six decades later, this legacy continues to shape jazz in Los Angeles and beyond. Experience the brilliance of this unique musical heritage as we showcase Altadena’s celebrated jazz artists, whose innovative work continues to push boundaries and inspire generations.

*This a truly strange one, but our top choice for cinephile bragging rights over the weekend. Sure, a week or two ago was seeing The Thing screening with John Carpenter and Bong Joon Ho and every guest on ever podcast we listen to telling us about it. Now it's this one.

In the 1930s, amid mounting competition from an influx of foreign cartoons, Japan’s animation industry began searching for cheaper and faster modes of production. Enter kami firumu, or paper films. These short films, both animated and live-action, were printed onto paper strips and glued together by hand.

Live musical accompaniment!
Co-presented by the Yanai Initiative.

The opening runs from 2-5 PM
