Desert X 2025 Quest For Art In Coachella

Unsui (Mirror)

Desert X 2025 has started in the Coachella Valley, to, of course, coincide with the upcoming Coachella music festival. What is Desert X? It's a multiple exhibit outdoor art show with super large exhibits perfect for taking photos in and about. Every exhibit is free to see and you can find it in stretches of the desert surrounding Coachella. It happens every two years and each time new and strange outdoor pieces populate the region. Just look it up online or get the app on your phone to find the exhibits within 30 minutes or so of Palm Springs. That's what we did.

G.H.O.S.T. Ride

It's a fun quest to see if you can explore all the entries as all are reachable in a day, though the G.H.O.S.T. Ride might be the hardest with a slightly longer than average hike than the rest of the exhibits. Bring water with you, sunscreen, bug repellent and watch out for rattlers if not on the main path.

Unsui (Mirror)

So far we've explored quite a few of ten listed on the website. Our favorites so far have been
Sanford Biggers' Unsui (Mirror) for its easy access and wonderful shimmering effect it gives off in the sunlight. Hope you see it on a not so cloudy day. It look like it came straight out of a manga.

Sarah Meyohas' Truth Arrives in Slanted Beams wasn't what we thought it be upon arrival, you'll notice the sidewalk you walk up onto it, is the piece too? When you get deeper, on it, play around to get those hidden mirrored messages out.

There's just something about Alison Saar's Soul Service Station, very simple, until you notice that gas pump has conch shells and a metal human heart. Acutally, it's kind of more creepy when we think about it.

It's all rainbows in the spiraling work of Kimsooja's To Breathe – Coachella Valley. Get wrapped in rainbows as you veer down it and enjoy the different spectrum of colors and everything else.

And, that's only some of the exhibits, there's more to explore. Be sure to look on a map first, but most aren't that hard to get too. Give yourself a few hours to check one or two and then grab something nice to nosh nearby!
