To celebrate the anniversary of the first Gojira film, which was released in theaters in Japan exactly 70 years ago, the Academy Museum presents its first-ever all-day marathon, featuring five classic and contemporary Godzilla films. From his origin as a symbol of the atomic menace, through his years as a colossal defender of the Earth, to modern incarnations that continue to reimagine his identity, Godzilla has proven to be a remarkably malleable cinematic icon, his image as indestructible as the monster himself. Throughout the day, be on the lookout for the famous kaiju on the move around the museum!

Godzilla Minus One (2023) won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects for its amazing digital realism, but the Godzilla film franchise is built upon a legacy of handmade special effects craftsmanship that began with a man in a monster suit. This talk uses the films shown during the Godzilla-thon! Movie Marathon at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures (AMMP) and more to explore the culture, techniques, and personalities that have brought Godzilla to life on screen.
The second session, GODZILLA AND THE JAPANESE ART OF SPECIAL EFFECTS, will focus on the creative foundation of the long-running Godzilla franchise, with behind-the-scenes stories and images from the making of the original Gojira (1954) and other classic Godzilla films at Toho Studios during the Golden Age of Japanese cinema.

We've
loved their sister convention held in Riverside the last two years,
it's Anime Pasadena. A smaller convention that makes up for it in great
panels, community and just so much to see and do. This is definitely
more for the fan as it doesn't have the most big names, but it does have
the perfect location. You're right in downtown Pasadena, so you can
easily find good food and parking.

A double bill of performances by Oglala Lakȟóta artist Kite (Music, BFA ‘14) and Mexico City-based collective Interspecifics brings together machine learning technologies, sound, the body, and Indigenous cosmologies.
For Wičháȟpi Wóihaŋbleya (Dreamlike Star), Kite performs with a custom computer that translates her body movements into experimental sounds and video by means of two hair braids she manipulates. Kite performs scores she has translated into Lakȟóta visual language, derived from the dreams of women and two-spirit community members, who consider dreaming as a sacred epistemological practice. Using her own body as an interface, each of Kite’s movements trains the machine learning software encoded with a Lakȟóta data set.
