Weekly What To Do: It's Your Destiny To Concierge

Woah, there's a lot of special anime engagements in theaters this week!

The Concierge is coming to select theaters on September 11. This is a one-day-only event. Odd, right? Not sure why, but this less than 90-minute feature is probably only gracing movie theaters in North America so it can be up for an award.

Synopsis: After her best friend Izzy unexpectedly dies in a bike accident, Anna struggles to put the pieces back together. Before she even has a chance to process, Booger, Izzy’s cat, escapes the Brooklyn apartment they used to share. As she turns her already unstable life upside down looking for him, a gnarly cat bite results in terrifying and surprising physical changes. Anna must face her grief head on before it consumes her completely. Eerie and strange, Booger toes the line between cringe-comedy and tragedy, taking views on a gross, surprisingly sweet journey.

Borrowing its title from Brautigan’s poem, All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace addresses one of the most pressing issues of our time—the impact of artificial intelligence—by proposing alternative directions for its future and how it changes the relationship between the human and non-human. Presenting a broad range of art forms, including visual art and performance, this exploration offers alternatives rooted in indigenous belief systems, and feminist, queer, and decolonial imaginaries.

"Ribald, tasteless and hilarious … this classic spoof of the Western genre by director Mel Brooks pokes fun at everyone and everything. A corrupt governor grants a reprieve to an African American convict if the condemned man agrees to serve as sheriff of a small Western town, believing that new sheriff will only live long enough to serve the needs of the governor and his nefarious railroad-baron backer. Academy Award nominations for Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Madeline Kahn); Best Music, Original Song; and Best Film Editing."

Reframing Dioramas: The Art of Preserving Wilderness at the Natural History Museum in Exposition Park and Mark Dion: Excavations at La Brea Tar Pits open to the public on September 15, 2024 and will be on view for a year.

Mark Dion: Excavations is an immersive, uncanny installation of a behind-the-scenes museum space. Displaying new work alongside early museum murals, dioramas, and maquettes of Ice Age mammals, this playfully irreverent presentation is in keeping with Dion’s well-known meticulous yet mischievous approach.

Reframing Dioramas: The Art of Preserving Wilderness explores the history of dioramas and deconstructs the art and science that makes them so compelling. Set in a newly refurbished diorama hall that had been closed for decades, the exhibition features three habitat installations made by contemporary artists.

"In the conclusion to Takashi Miike’s uproarious splatter-action trilogy, Riki Takeuchi and Sho Aikawa are catapulted into a future Yokohama ruled by multilingual gangs and cyborg soldiers, where they once again butt heads in a fashion-forward, cyberpunk-tinged melee."
