Weekly What To Do: WonderCon & What Else?



WonderCon is closing in. Taking place March 24 - 26 at the Anaheim Convention Center. The yearly convention celebrates all your favorite fan activities from comics to streaming, movies to anime. Oh, and of course, cosplay. It's starting this Friday and the full schedule is up. You can still grab a pass and head to Anaheim this weekend. Check out the Exhibit Hall Map and list here and try and sign up for Funko timed entries for their booth if you already have your badge. 
 
Friday at $45 for adults and $55 Saturday, Sunday $35
Plus, whatever unfair rates for parking.

Celebrations for Transformed Hammer Museum
 
Marking two decades of transformation, on March 26, 2023 the Hammer will open the Lynda and Stewart Resnick Cultural Center, unveiling new street-level exhibition spaces, including an expansive lobby that will house rotating installations, a new 5,600-square-foot street-facing gallery, and an outdoor sculpture terrace.

Special event open to members at the Immerse level ($250) and higher. Membership admits 2. Dance in the Hammer’s courtyard to an all vinyl set from DJ Pee .Wee aka Anderson .Paak! Be among the first to be welcomed through the Hammer’s new main entrance and lobby, with brand-new exhibition spaces featuring large-scale installations by artists Chiharu Shiota and Rita McBride, plus a new outdoor sculpture terrace featuring Sanford Biggers’ 25-foot-tall cast-bronze sculpture Oracle. Eight exhibitions will be on view with galleries open late.

 
Sunday, March 26, 2023, 11AM-6PM: PUBLIC OPENING OF TRANSFORMED HAMMER MUSEUM
Open to all with no reservations required, the Hammer will welcome guests to explore the museum’s new spaces and inaugural exhibitions, featuring tours led by curators and educators, art-making activities, and more. Throughout the day, the Billy Wilder Theater will be screening artists’ videos in tandem with the exhibition Full Burn: Video from the Hammer Contemporary Collection.

Parking is available in the lot beneath the Hammer Museum, accessed via Westwood Boulevard or Glendon Avenue. For the members event on Saturday, March 25, parking will be free.

On Sunday, March 26, parking is $8. Valet parking available for $10 on Lindbrook Drive. Rideshare or visitor drop off is available on Lindbrook Drive. Located on the north side of the Museum between Westwood Boulevard and Glendon Avenue, this entrance has an accessible ramp up to the courtyard level. Visitors may also be dropped off in the parking garage underneath the museum, where there is an accessible ramp.

 Award winning movie poster artist Akiko Stehrenberger will be debuting new posters alongside limited editions of some of her greatest hits, as well as a selection of real media pieces.
 
 Fine artist and illustrator Patrick Mathews will be debuting all new paintings, ceramics, and exclusive merchandise in his first solo exhibition! Inspired by his travels, heavy metal, and Japanese folklore, his latest collection is truly a feast for the senses!

 When Satsuki and her sister Mei move with their father to a new home in the countryside, they find country life is not as simple as it seems.  NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUMS OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY (NHMLAC)
TO OFFER FREE ADMISSION TO LAUSD STUDENTS IF STRIKE COMMENCES
 
-In anticipation for a possible walk-out by essential union laborers, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) in Exposition Park and La Brea Tar Pits in Hancock Park, announced they will offer free general admission to Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) students and chaperones during what is expected to be a three-day strike beginning Tuesday, March 21. Free general admission tickets will be available only onsite at the Museums’ ticket counters.
