Olvera Street
Free
For
over 35 years, the merchants on Olvera Street have celebrated Dia de
los Muertos. The celebration has evolved to incorporate the
pre-Columbian, Aztec, Mayan and Catholic rituals surrounding death. Each
night, a vibrant and colorful procession sets the stage for our
ceremony.
Dia de los Muertos is, in fact, a celebration of life –
it is not a time to mourn our loved ones, rather it is a time to
remember the lives they lead and the many things they enjoyed during
that life. Death is a part of life, and so we honor it. Dia de los
Muertos at Olvera Street is the only celebration of its kind in Los
Angeles – A nine (9) day festival, with a nightly procession, community
altars on display, and entertainment.

We're
back for our hugely popular annual Halloween mash-up of film and opera
at the Theatre at Ace Hotel. This time we’ve got the Boris Karloff
shocker on the big screen, complete with mad scientist, bumbling
henchman and mob of torch-bearing villagers.
This
1931 masterpiece of horror was originally released without a musical
score, which inspired composer Michael Shapiro to fill in the void by
creating an original new soundtrack. As the classic film plays on the
big screen, he'll conduct his gorgeous and atmospheric score, performed
live by the LA Opera Orchestra, making this the ultimate audience
experience for a truly iconic film.

During the transition to sound production, Hollywood studios faced a
dilemma: How to export English-language films to lucrative non-English
speaking foreign markets. It was easy enough during the silent era—just
swap out the title cards—but the spoken word presented a unique
challenge. Some studios, such as Universal, chose to make multiple
versions of the same film featuring the same story told with different
actors speaking their native languages. The most famous example of this
approach is the Spanish-language version of Dracula in 1931,
not only because it survives intact after being thought lost for
decades, but also because it arguably rivals—some would say exceeds—the
artistry of its counterpart.
