Ancestral Connections: In Xochitl In Cuicatl / Flower & Song

Saturday, July 16, at 2pm

An original performance offering and exploration of ancestral knowledge through the Mesoamerican tradition of In Xochitl In Cuicatl (meaning "flower" and "song" in the Nahuatl language) with a contemporary urban perspective. This production was created by local teens who completed a six-week intensive theater program focused on Greek, Roman, and Mesoamerican mythologies. In this performance of poetry, movement, and song, they share their stories and talents. This summer theater program for teens aged 14 to 18 is a partnership between the Getty Museum, About Productions, and Plaza de la Raza. The performance repeats on Friday, July 22 at Plaza de la Raza in Lincoln Heights.

 

Making Scents of the Ancient World: Perfumes of Persia

Saturdays, July 16, July 30, August 6, and August 20, from 11am to 3pm

Perfume was everywhere in the ancient world. In ancient Persia alluring scents were made from natural materials such as flowers, herbs, resins, and more. Learn the history of perfume making, then create your own scent inspired by the aromatics of ancient Persia in this free, drop-in workshop. This event complements the exhibition Persia: Ancient Iran and the Classical World.

Held Inside the Iconic Dome of the 100” Telescope
 
 The performances are presented inside the iconic vaulted dome of the 100-inch telescope. . The program on July 17th will feature an eclectic blend of Jazz and More with premier accordionist Cory Pesaturo, Leah Zeger, violin, and Jorge Villanueva, percussion. Along with improvisation, Pesaturo is known for his extensive versatility, playing 15 different genres from Klezmer to French, Balkan to Funk, Tango to Rock, Italian to Electronic. Primarily known as a jazz artist, he has recorded with John Patitucci and George Garzone.

For the DJs of the Chulita Vinyl Club, sharing music is a way to celebrate together, and resist the erasure of culture. With chapters in California and Texas, members of the CVC are women, gender-non-conforming, non-binary, LGBTQ+ and self-identifying people of color who bring their own musical point of view to what they spin, ranging from ’60s girl groups, riot grrrl and yé-yé pop to Tejano, Chicano oldies and Mexican punk. Join the Chulita Vinyl Club for a celebration of classic LA music.
