Inspired by her own unique take on Japanese manga, Shimoda is widely known for her works that are at once enchanting and disarming, portraying a world where cuteness and horror coexist. Her portraits of children are full of countless possibilities, described by the artist as "where fantasy meets reality, past meets future, and life meets death, in a world that is yet to be reborn.” The artist arrived onto the international scene in 2014 with her U.S. exhibition Fantastic Planet, Goodbye Man at CHG, and since then, Shimoda has become one of the most widely recognized names in New Contemporary art rising out of Japan.

L-R: “Turn Sadness Around the World Into Love,” “Children of This Planet #48,” “Fight the Void #1,” “Defense #2,” and “Question the Focus #3”

Featuring 25 pieces (including new works from her series “Children of This Planet,” “Question the Focus,” “God Is Dead, But…,” “Defense, and “Fight the Void”), Fight to Live in the Void marks Shimoda’s sixth solo exhibit at CHG (following her major solo Silence and Affirmation and mini-solo Affirmation of Existence at the gallery in 2020) and the spectacular evolution of her paintings, as she contemplates the drama of the 2022 world stage with this new body of work.

These are recommendations on what to see that you won't normally get outside of LA's foreign or independent movie scene.

CGV Cinema Koreatown

The story will probably be garbage, however the action and martial arts will probably be top notch as the first film was loved for the carnage it contained.

 Synopsis:
A girl wakes up in a huge secret laboratory. then accidentally meets another girl who is trying to protect her house from a gang. The mystery girl overthrows the gang with her unexpected powers, and laboratory staff set out to find her.

Glendale on Jun 24th

This looks to be almost a horror film about foodies trying to discover the art of "mukbang" in a what looks like European way. Some dark humor laughs from finding the art in farts and other gases escaping you after a good meal.

Synopsis:
Set at an institute devoted to culinary and alimentary performance, a collective finds themselves embroiled in power struggles, artistic vendettas and gastrointestinal disorders.
