We've been waiting for this one since we read the comic. Prime is making Brian K. Vaughan's comic about time traveling paper girls into a reality. We want a release date and a trailer. It becomes all kinds of a strange epic in the story. So here's hoping it gets to finish the whole story from the comics.
Top Gun: Maverick has a call sign maker, a nice little gimmick to remind you the movie comes out at the end of the month.
Fantasia announced it's first wave of films...and they're mouth-watering cinema. Deadstream had our attention since Southwest, but we've only just heard of the new ridiculous Japanese film Kappei about boys raised to survive the end of the world, but it never happens so they are all too powerful to do anything normal.
DEADSTREAM (USA) – Dirs: Vanessa Winter, Joseph Winter
Disgraced and demonetized after a public controversy, a washed up Internet personality tries to win back his followers by livestreaming himself spending one night alone in an abandoned haunted house. Unfortunately, he accidentally pisses off a vengeful spirit. A wild, splatstick cross between EVIL DEAD and the most ill-fated livestream imaginable. Official Selection: SXSW 2022. Canadian Premiere.

KAPPEI BRINGS JAPANESE COMEDY TO A NEW LEVEL OF PURE APOCALYPTIC FUN
Nostradamus predicted that the world would end in 1999, but he royally screwed up. In 2022, Kappei and his fellow doomsday warriors, isolated and trained since their childhood, must learn to live a “normal” life with great supernatural powers – but no social skills whatsoever. In his feature directorial debut KAPPEI, Takashi Hirano (producer of KAMIKAZE GIRLS) creates a wonderfully whimsical coming-of-age action-comedy with the help of screenwriter Yuichi Tokunaga (FLY ME TO THE SAITAMA) and a devilishly funny performance from Actor Hideaki Ito (LESSON OF THE EVIL, TOKYO VICE). North American Premiere.
We, however, don't care for Baby Assassins, also from Japan, that just isn't that fun.
And just another reminder that if you head out to the desert, specifically Pioneertown, you'll be at the first Pioneertown International Film Festival. Which will have a Pie Duel, An American Tail: Fievel Goes West, and some new and old cowboy films, live music and more. It all takes place May 27-29, perfect for Memorial Day Weekend plans.
