Happy Birthday, Godzilla in November
This November we celebrate a giant radioactive lizard whose been in our hearts for 67 years, Godzilla. And what better way then special screenings, some where the upped them to 4k?
From November 5-11, the Godzilla birthday festivities continue at select Alamo Drafthouse locations with a 50th anniversary screening of one of Godzilla’s strangest adventures ever, “Godzilla vs. Hedorah,” as well as 2016’s critically-acclaimed “Shin Godzilla.” Then, beginning the week of November 12th, select Alamo Drafthouse locations will present a must-see double feature spectacular – two classics of the Heisei era never before seen in American cinemas:
1984’s “The Return of Godzilla,” the kickoff to the Heisei era and a direct sequel to “Gojira,” which was heavily re-edited and released in the United States as “Godzilla 1985.” The release of the original Japanese version has never been officially screened on U.S. grounds.
1989’s “Godzilla vs. Biollante,” which only received a direct-to-video release in the U.S. has never received an official release in American theaters.

"If you've never seen HOUSE, you've never seen the full capacity of what cinema can do. Director Obayashi coming out of TV and commercials decided to use every trick in the book (and invent a whole host of new tricks) to tell his story of a group of teenage Japanese school girls who go to visit an eccentric Aunt in the country only to discover she's a bloodthirsty demon wanting to feast on their youth so she can get young herself.
And yet, the movie is a musical, happy go lucky, avante garde hilarious go for broke horror comedy coming of age story with scenes and effects and images you'll never forget."
A Halloween tradition! Don’t miss classic silent cinema with a live organ soundtrack. Film critic Leonard Maltin described Clark Wilson as a “master of silent film and showman of the first order” for his organ accompaniments of silent films. This Halloween, Wilson performs a haunting score for John S. Robertson’s 1920 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, starring John Barrymore.

The final film by Nobuhiko Obayashi finds the late director returning to the subject of Japan’s history of warfare following the completion of his “War Trilogy,” which ended with Hanagatami. On the last night of its existence, a small movie theater in Onomichi—the seaside town of Obayashi’s youth where he shot nearly a dozen films—screens an all-night marathon of Japanese war films. When lightning strikes the theater, three young men are transported into the world onscreen where they experience the violent battles of several wars leading up to the bombing of Hiroshima.

WAVE: New Currents in Japanese Graphic Arts
We had a chance to wander through WAVE: New Currents in Japanese Graphic Arts at Japan House in the currently being redone Hollywood and Highland. This is a free exhibit showing off some Japanese artists and they definitely have some different pieces to gawk and gander at.
Just a heads up, a special online event for the show is taking place next month.
