Primal is a new animated short mini-series from Genndy Tartakovsky, creator of Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack. It's ultra violent looking fun about a caveman battling dinosaurs. To qualify for awards it has to run for at least one week in a theater and the Downtown Independent hasn't been killed off by Drafthouse Downtown...yet. So, we get a week to see it in a theater instead of on television.
The showings could actually be all free as Cartoon Network paid the theater to play the mini-cartoon series, but it's $13.59 online and $12.50 in person.
The chance of getting awards for this short series are so "prestigious" that CN will spend thousands of dollars to rent the theater to play it.
It happens all the time around LA, usually at a Laemmles. It's gotta happen in LA instead of any theater in the counry or it can't be up for certain awards and frankly, yes, it is kind of a dirty trick that's been around forever.
