Obon is a time to remind us of how much our parents and grandparents, our
ancestors, have done to make our lives happy. It is an opportunity to
rejoice in the life that we enjoy, to express gratitude for all of the
conditions, both past and present, that help to sustain our lives, and a
time to reflect on the wishes our predecessors have for us. The
festival features food, games, farmers market, flower market, tea
ceremony demonstrations, traditional Bon Odori Dancing, and various
types of entertainment.
The city of LA is paying tribute to Jonathan Gold, who recently passed with a number of events.
LA Times reports on all the places that will light up at night on Saturday Night, July 28th, including themselves, of course.
"The Los Angeles Times will light a tribute to Gold on its new building
in El Segundo as the sun sets on Saturday. After sundown, landmarks
including L.A. City Hall tower, the Wilshire Grand Center, The Broad, US
Bank Tower, Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain in Grand Park, Natural
History Museum, pylons at LAX and Pacific Wheel on the Santa Monica Pier
will also be illuminated for the occasion. Additional venues and
events, including The Wiltern, the Ford Theatres, The Theatre at Ace
Hotel, Chinatown Summer Nights and the Fairplex in Pomona will also
display messages and projections in Gold’s honor, with more to be
confirmed and all welcome to participate."
After a bunch of hints online we have some big news for fans of the Japanese Taiko Drum Master series. It's coming back to North America this November with two recent console games released in Japan coming here. Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun! just came out on the Switch in Japan and earlier this year Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum Session! came out on PS4. Both games are scheduled to come out here in the US in November.
Taiko Drum Master is a series of rhythm games that have you hammering on a taiko drum, a special drum played mostly at festivals or for ceremonies in Japan. The arcade version has two massive drums so you can compete with friends. We first got an American version for the PS2 in 2004. That was the last time the game was officially released here. You might have been lucky and gotten to play the arcade machine version at a local arcade. The only ones we know about even close to LA are at Round 1 arcades surrounding the city.
Details are still thin on the games prices, they come out November 2nd. The other issue is what songs will be allowed for the North American version due to licensing. We want to play Pop Team Epic's theme song, for the Switch version, but that means possibly get the blessing of Funimation and the right holders in Japan. We also might get American pop and cartoon themes it all depends on what Bandai Namco does with bringing the game here.
The other issue will be if you get the drum or drums with the game, you can buy the games separately, but the real fun is jamming on your own taiko drum peripheral.
Nintendo Labo's newest collect of cardboard comes out September for $69.99 and it's for those on the move.
We're getting some much needed shark love past Shark Week, and though the exhibit sucked at the Paley Center, this is actually gonna take a bite out of your summer doldrums.

Yes, were getting a movie marathon courtesy of Beyond Fest, featuring a special sneak preview of Warner Bros. Pictures and Gravity Pictures’ THE MEG in 3-D. Also in 3D, the utterly bad, but fun to watch with others Jaws 3D. And the "classic" Deep Blue Sea, which the How Did This Get Made Podcast hypothesized that LL Cool J's character parrot might have been a figment of his imagination. These movies all know what they are and that's not top notch writing, it's chomping the scenery and people.
We at TTDILA have enemies. We haven't had a new one in a while and some even died off, rot in Hell bikingla.com, but we've just added our newest enemy to the list,
thedukeofdonuts. The duke, not John Wayne, is added to the distinguished list of ghost hunters we hate, as they seem to be our only other enemies at this time, here's looking at you some blog devoted to riding Bird scooters. Check out our enemies in the enemy section.
The Duke of Donuts, real name Ilya Albert, goes around LA trying different donuts. Wearing a ridiculously long Abraham Lincoln hat he reviews and takes photos from Instagram about his adventures. The duke even went on the recent donut quest the city had, which we didn't have the time to complete.
The reason we consider him an enemy is because we had a similar idea of going to businesses in a top hat, but he has already done that. Also, we have not had the ability to cover all the donut news in LA. We missed DTLA Donut Fest and miss out on LA's amazing donuts, because there is just too much to cover and too many carbohydrates for us. So main reason, jealousy.
So dukeofdonuts consider yourself our enemy. If we see you, we"ll knock that top hat right off your head.
Here's a link to the James Gunn Re-Hire Petition to try and get Disney to re-hire him after he was just fired over the weekend. James Gunn is the director and writer of The Guardians of the Galaxy movies and was just about to start shooting the third film. He created the style and feel of the movies and without him the third film will just not be the same.
If you haven't heard, he was fired by Disney for some stupid and extremely bad jokes he had on Twitter over a decade ago, before he even worked for Disney. This seems utterly unfair as he didn't do anything with his time at Disney and Disney had to have known of his earlier gross work that was at Troma with gross-out and sex humor. This is the same man who from Troma made live action Scooby-Doo movies, so Disney is acting very strange. Out of fear that they could be tied to his tweets before he worked for them they axed him, which is crazy.
And James Gunn himself has even apologized for those tweets, but they were just stupid comments and him trying to be edgy and were just jokes.

With All My Love For The Tulips, I Pray Forever (2011) exemplifies the
dualism found throughout her work between the organic and the
artificial. Shown here for the first time in Los Angeles, the oversized
flower-potted tulips made from fiberglass–reinforced plastic are painted
with the same red polka dots as the floor, ceiling, and walls, creating
an immersive viewing experience while at the same time diminishing the
appearance of depth.

SLEEP takes the listener on an overnight eight-hour musical
journey that pushes the boundaries of post-minimalism and the interplay of
music and consciousness. Scored for piano, strings, electronics and vocals,
Richter’s piece is an exquisite hybrid of classical and electronic music across
31 uninterrupted pieces. Performed live by Max Richter on piano and keyboard
along with the musicians on the 2015 Deutsche Grammophon recording of the work,
American Contemporary Music Ensemble, and soprano Grace Davidson, SLEEP invites
listeners to fall asleep and drift in and out of consciousness and lucid dream
states, entering into another world through the act of slumbering. The
absorbing soundscape culminates as dawn breaks and sunlight streams over City
Hall and into Grand Park, awakening the audience to a new day.
NEO TOKYO: A Tribute to Katsuhiro Otomo's post nuclear world of Akira. This
show will feature tribute artwork for one of the most groundbreaking
manga in history. Akira took eight years to complete and would culminate
in over 2000 pages of artwork. It would go on to influence generations
of artists in comics and animation throughout the entire world.
