Pioneering
director and horror icon George Romero unleashed onto unsuspecting
viewers the modern film zombie—a specter that remains a shockingly
adaptable metaphor for contemporary life. In honor of the late master of
the undead, we screen one of his classics, Dawn of the Dead. Like Night of the Living Dead before it, Dawn helped shape the zombie genre and tapped into the zeitgeist of its
historical moment with a deft combination of blood, tension, and social
satire.

AFI Fest 2017 Schedule Up
The free film festival comes back to LA this November and the schedule for films is up now.
AFI Fest 2017
Nov 9-16
Multiple Theaters in Hollywood
Free tickets for AFI FEST 2017 presented by Audi will be available beginning on Wednesday, November 1.
This year's selection once again has some amazing films including: The Disaster Artist, showing us all how Tommy Wiseau's The Room was made starring James Franco. Mrs Hyde, out of of France is a retelling of the story in a modern sending, but this time about a female teacher. The Endless has a sci-fi concept to it about two brothers going back to their cult, but having two separate views of what happened. AVA looks like pure French art film; a girl will be going blind soon so she does the most rational thing of finding her sexuality by stealing a dog...
Some titles many fans have been looking forward to will be there including a showing of Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water, a love story based around the creature from the black lagoon. Not specifically that creature, because Universal wouldn't let him do it.
We also get the anime Mary and the Witch's Flower, that looks like Ghibli, but isn't.
Our usual favorite section of Midnight only has three films this year. AFI really needs to start finding the weirder and creepier stuff for one of our favorite showcases of what can only go on way past bed time.

Spelunky 2 We Need You
Just announced, but with no real date is Spelunky 2. The only details so far is that it'll come out on PS4 first than PC. The trailer alludes to maybe visiting the sky instead of going underground...whatever that means.

Halloween Top Picks 80's Horror Made Now: The Barn & All The Devils Are Here
If you want something to watch, but feel like you want 80's nostalgia why not try these two gems made only far back as 2015. These trailers are so fun to watch if you want to see some, well, modern 80's horror movies.
First up, The Barn! A film that brings three supernatural slashers out from Hell to collect body parts instead of treats on Halloween. The details on the slashers and the style from the trailer make this film a must for your Halloween party.
We can't find it streaming, but you can buy it from The Barn Merch Store in Blu-ray and VHS format.
Second up, All The Devils Are Here has that same 80's feel, but what looks like a demonic problem taking over another band of young college kids. It looks like this has a bit more of a comedy side to it.
This one is Streaming on Amazon.

Oh, I love the marketing team behind this one. On Oct 31st, the first 500 people dressed as scary clowns that role into select Burger Kings will get a free whopper. And we have of one those Burger Kings, which there are only 5 in the whole country. Head to the Burger King at 545 N Victory Blvd, Burbank, CA 91502 starting at 7pm to get your Whopper...as long as you're dressed as a scary clown.
This is like two shots fired across the bow of McD's as it seems like a better campaign then the awful Szechuan sauce fiasco that recently happened earlier this month. And the clown in the commercial looks like Ronald.
Oh, I can't wait for the photos to pop-up on social media that night and if things go bad, well they'll just be a Hell of a lot of scary clowns in Burbank on Halloween.

Soon after sound took hold in the movie industry, Hollywood studios
experimented with ways to attract Spanish-speaking audiences. Using
Latin-American actors, technicians and directors, they shot
Spanish-language versions of their films on the same sets. Notable among
these alternate versions is this stylish adaptation of Bram Stoker’s
1897 novel. Directed by George Melford, Drácula was filmed at
night during the production of the 1931 English-language version that
starred Bela Lugosi.

The Lure Special Edition Review Musical Mermaid Horror From Poland
Let's start at The Little Mermaid and work are way back at how this isn't anything as cute. Just in time for Halloween and to freak out your friends is
Agnieszka Smoczynska's The Lure. We reviewed it about a year ago for AFI Fest where the lead actress Marta Mazurek, who plays the mermaid Silver, sang, "Part of Your World,' in Polish for us attending the screening. The film just came out from Criterion and would be best paired with their other release of the insane Japanese horror film House for Halloween.
The Lure
Unlike The Little Mermaid, the mermaids in this film hunger for human flesh. They eat people. Not unlike The Little Mermaid, the film is a musical. There are some crazy weird musical numbers starting at a song about no intentions of eating you, to shopping and getting human legs during surgery.
What to dwell on first, the music video style that happens when songs occur or the lyrics that are just nonsense. Many of the songs make zero sense when subtitled, there just nonsense you might find in a catchy song. The music video like musical numbers differ from an amazing look after a fight with everything stuck, frozen in time to some upbeat strip-tease dance numbers for a club.
Set in the 1980's two Mermaids come ashore to join a band and learn and love humanity. Oh, and sometimes eat people. The club is their stomping ground and their voices, used to drag people to their doom, are now used to get a crowd jumping.
It's a remarkably weird film worth viewing in the best format that Criterion can release on Blu-Ray with special features including a few deleted scenes and a making of doc.
There's too many different parts for me to marvel at. I just love how they pulled off the Mermiad's creepy eel like tails, which in no way look as nice as Arial's flipper. Then, there's just a long shot of the club going through every section that's just well choreographed. I mean, it looked so good it reminded me of a Wes Anderson long shot.
This is a movie that should fit in your collection if you love horror, crazy Japanese live-action films and or musicals. It's no Little Mermaid and would only be if she was doing a massive amount of cocaine.
Publisher provided Blu-ray for review.

Cucumber Quest The Doughnut Kingdom & Head Games: The Graphic Novel Quick Reviews
Cucumber Quest: The Doughnut Kingdom
by Gigi D.G.
This sugary sweet book is about two bunny siblings trying to save their kingdom from adult stupidity in what will be a four volume adventure. If you wanted adorability up to the max with an easy to get into story then look no further.
Maybe it was just too cute for me, but I think this book we go to my little sister, if I had one.
Head Games: The Graphic Novel
by Craig McDonald
Like a film noir detective story that's a bit darker than usual about a writer trying to sell a bogus skull n the 1950's and getting into some deeper plot with some real history mixed in. It has a great dark art style that makes it feel old to the touch.
It just wasn't my speed or style, if you're more willing to get set-up for a bigger story then these pages are for you.
