The Spider Pavilion at the Natural History Museum of Los
Angeles County (NHM) will open on Sunday, October 30, 2016 in NHM’s new airier
and roomier outdoor pavilion. The first exhibit of its kind in the United
States, the Spider Pavilion has been a seasonal highlight at NHM since its
inception in 2004 and is now being emulated at other institutions across the
country. Guests will have the rare opportunity to immerse themselves in the
spiders’ habitat and witness the day-to-day lives of these often misunderstood,
but uniquely talented creatures. A Spider Den will house various species
–including the pink toe tarantula and the jumping spider –in enclosed habitats.
Inside the pavilion, visitors will walk among orb weavers and their intricate
webs while learning from Gallery Interpreters about these remarkable arachnids.

Cinefamily presents our favorite annual Halloween tradition: the spine-tingling horror of The Tingler,
William Castle’s weirdo masterpiece of gimmickry about a lobster-shaped
monster that feeds on terror within the human body! Aside from being
the first film to use LSD as a plot device, the original theatrical run
was presented in “Percepto,” whereby theater patrons were administered
buzzer shocks in their seats, to simulate the monster’s attack. The
result, of course, was giddy insanity, as star Vincent Price’s voice
urges patrons to “scream for your lives!” As if that wasn’t enough, The Tingler
features a major subplot based on our very own Silent Movie Theatre and
its original owners, the Hamptons. Feel a tingle up your spine as you
watch these scenes set in the very location where you are sitting—and

In James Whale’s follow-up to his 1931 Frankenstein, Mary
Shelley reveals that the main characters of her novel have survived. Dr.
Frankenstein (Colin Clive) is urged by the mad Dr. Pretorius (Ernest
Thesiger) to build Frankenstein’s monster a female companion. The
monster (Boris Karloff), meanwhile, discovers joy, tragedy, and, most
frequently, fear-driven hatred in his interactions with humans. The
monster only wants companionship, but he remains misunderstood and
loathed because of his appearance.
