Murder LA 000067
Troy McVey and Colby Kronholm are from Greenville, Maine. Both young, white athletes had made the honor roll in high school. They also racked up convictions for nonviolent offenses in 2011.
McVey in a prior booking photo via Bangor Daily News |
In January 2015 the men found themselves in Hollywood, apparently living out of a car. Moments before midnight on Sunday, January 4th, the pair were allegedly caught on surveillance tape smashing multiple car windows on Cahuenga Blvd., near Hollywood Blvd. After travelling up the block they encountered 52-year-old Richard Miller.
What happened next is currently in some dispute. Early police statements indicate that there were several witnesses, including an off duty officer, who heard an argument and one of the suspects saying "Give me my money." After a short time McVey allegedly shot Miller several times, at which point he and Kronholm fled the scene. The off duty officer--and possibly other witnesses--followed them until they took refuge someplace on Wilcox Ave. and waited there for LAPD to arrive. Both were taken into custody, McVey charged as the shooter.
Detectives said that the suspects were not talking, so they speculated that it could have been a "drug deal gone bad" or mistaken identity.
It took nearly two weeks for Miller to be publicly identified, possibly delayed due to the difficulty of locating his next of kin. He was reportedly identified by his fingerprints, thanks to at least one prior arrest. Some sources say he was homeless at the time.
Kronholm at arraignment via Press Herald |
When McVey and Kronholm appeared in court Wednesday, January 21st, they both pleaded not guilty and McVey's lawyer claimed that the two men were actually the victims, having been simply walking around the area when two men--one of them Miller--attempted to rob them. He said McVey shot in self defense and the second assailant fled.
Bail has been set at $1 million for each defendant. No word on when the trial will commence.

Will Anyone Show Up To Accept The Best Video Game Annie?
I've gone to the Annie Awards, happening this Saturday, Jan 31st, for the last four few years now and twice the winner of Best Video Game has not shown up. First it was developer Playdead for Limbo and the next time it was Sony and Thatgamecompany for Journey. In both instances no representative was sent to pick up the award. I even discussed why Journey was missing a rep for the show with its creator Jenova Chen. He told me Sony told him they had it covered. The guys over at PlayDead simply told me that didn't have time to make it to LA.
This year Ubisoft and Microsoft Studios/Turn 10/Playground Games are in the running for Child of Light, Valiant Hearts and Forza Horizon 2 (Microsoft). In all honesty, I'm unsure if anyone will be there to pick up the award, no matter who wins.
None of the studios are LA based, number 1. Number 2, I'm not sure if anyone that makes the games knows as both Ubisoft and Microsoft are so big. This has happened before with Sony, the developer might know about the show, but the Publisher says it will be handling it. Distance does play in as a factor, though they're big studios the developers might have to pay out of pocket to go to any award show they're nominated for.
I have contacted Ubisoft press and at this time haven't heard back from them about anything having to do with the award show. I didn't bother with Forza Horizon, because who cares, it's not Burnout.
Another video game category has finalist we might not see, the category of Outstanding Achievement, Character Animation in a Video Game has Mike Mennillo - Assassin's Creed Unity - Ubisoft Montreal; Don't Starve: Console Edition - Klei Entertainment Inc. and Alex Drouin - Child Of Light - Ubisoft Montreal.
As written about before on the site, Assassin's Creed Unity must be a joke, the horrible scathing reviews of problems the game had upon release where characters faces leaked out must have never reached Annie Award voter's ears. Once again, I'm not sure if Ubisoft even knows or informed Mennillo, same goes for Alex Drouin. Klei Entertainment Inc is based in Canada and doesn't even have a person named for Don't Starve.
So with that remember to watch the live stream of the event on this site while chilling at home to see if anyone shows up for an award.

Water 101 Real? Happens April 1st
Being a pretentious douche became a little bit more easy in LA with Water 101, a water tasting class for $50 at both Patina and Ray's & Stark Bar. News just hit the internet a few days ago of classes taking place at Patina with "water connoisseur", not a real thing, Martin Riese. In the class you'll learn to taste the differences in water? Maybe if it's hot or cold.
Classes have already taken place at Ray's & Stark Bar. Patina is just getting the classes this year, starting with one Feb 1 and oddly enough April 1st. Some might consider the April 1st class a joke more than it is already.
We banned a super fun giant slip'n'slide downtown to conserve water. We can't ban this thing too? I don't care if the waters imported, it keeps the douchiness too fresh here in LA.
Galco's, please have another soda tasting earlier than this summer!

S.H.I.E.L.D. Sucks: The Want To Kill Speedball's Cat
The latest issue of All New Invaders, #14, has S.H.I.E.L.D. doing what it does best, failing morally or just plain failing to do anything worthwhile to help people. Being used to attack the X-Men by Mystique or a mind-controlled by Inhumans, S.H.I.E.L.D. remains useful for air ship disasters.
Their latest wrongdoing, wanting to kill Niels, which is never named, because S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn't have good intelligence gathering. Is it wrong of me to care more about this cat's possible death than Wolverine's? People don't like cute pets in bad situations, just look at the Go Daddy commercial that got pulled for referencing a puppy mill.
Simply refereed to as Speedball's cat, this hyper-kinetic kitty is to be euthanized. Most likely the first Human Torch, Jim Hammond, whose a robot, will probably save Niels now that S.H.I.E.L.D. is done studying him. They sometimes treat him less than human, because S.H.I.E.L.D. sucks.
Jim Hammond recently took care of the Future Foundation's many kid members after S.H.I.E.L.D. took them away from the Fantastic Four and treated them like prisoners. Oh S.H.I.E.L.D., you're such a bad organization.
We do agree that Speedball in general sucks for not taking care of his cat, but everyone already hates Speedball.
It's also going to be somewhat hard to kill him unless they're just going to slowly starve poor Niels to death.
Wikia says: Niels has the super ability to create a kinetic field of unknown energy around himself, which absorbed all kinetic energy directed against him. This absorption could vary from resisting the effects of physical objects such as bricks and rocks to resisting that of energy and fire and even explosions. Within his kinetic field it was nearly impossible for him to be hurt, and he instead bounced harmlessly from object to object, with no loss or transference of momentum. When transformed he is surrounded by a display of multi-colored bubbles.

"Samsara by Los Angeles-based Kour Pour will include
new paintings and related installation works that continue the artist’s recent
carpet painting series. In the first iteration of the series, historic examples
of carpets were directly appropriated from auction and museum catalogues; in
the new works the artist has created original compositions that juxtapose sets
of imagery that are stripped from their own temporal context by the use of
today’s technologies —Google Images, clip art CD-ROMS Photoshop—and then
re-contextualized on canvas through months of painstaking labor—generating a
scenario that brings to mind a “networked bazaar of history and futurity.”
