In Focus: Tokyo @ The Getty

For those into Japanese culture, Getty has a new exhibit for you from four photographers on Japan's most well known city, Tokyo.

In Focus: Tokyo
Date: Daily, August 5 - December 14, 2014,
Location: West Pavilion, Lower Level, Getty Center
Admission: Free

Although a kaleidoscopic vision would seem to be required to represent the hyperreal megalopolis of Tokyo, the four Japanese photographers in this exhibition have found a way to portray their city at a human scale. Mikiko Hara adopts a quiet, daylit, snapshot style for spontaneous portraits of her young contemporaries; Daido Moriyama haunts the burgeoning neighborhood of Shinjuku for fragments of nightlife; Shigeichi Nagano observes the interactions of community within a perpetually rebuilt environment; and Masato Seto focuses on the hard-won leisure of local couples escaping the cramped quarters of high-rise living.

Ghostbusters in Anime

Maybe animators in Japan have finally cracked, maybe they just like the movies and know it's the 30th Anniversary of the ghost-busting team. Two animes that came out last week featured cameos from the Ghostbusters and Slimer.

Tokyo ESP episode 3 featured the Ghostbusters hunting and capturing a cute defenseless flying esper penguin, Peggy. Luckily the epser heroine of the series,  Rinka Urushiba rescues him.

Dr. Venkman arrives

There's nothing cuter than this scene in the episode
Then over in Space Dandy episode 17 we have Slimer making a shot cameo that made fun of many more movies than just Ghostbusters, nobody puts Dandy in the corner!
Slimer wearing a captain's hat means it's parody?

It's a perfect Adult Swim show in that it makes no sense

Mangabomb The Strange New Free Manga Magazine

Mangabomb was picked up over the weekend in Little Tokyo; it has free distribution in LA, Vegas and Frisco. It's an odd one to say the least. The free manga magazine seemingly has no ties to any of the anime or manga companies that are well known and its stories are decidedly different.

Issue 0 starts off with Salaryman Kintaro : Money Wars about a Japanese businessman starting work at a new company. Not the most exciting adventure to get young readers to keep reading. The other two tales: Sugar Sugar Rune; two magical girls vying to be queen, GGG; an old thief still has style, are more broad to get a wider audience.

Odd that this mag had no seen presence at Anime Expo. The magazine did capture photos from the recent LA Cosplay Con and revealed it wishes to cover more cosplay events to chronicle.

The magazine editor, Kenichi Nakamura, believes he'll boost distribution of the magazine to 33 cities by 2017.

Issue 1 comes out Aug 5, look for it in Little Tokyo and Japanese community areas.

In what we’d call a smart move to do something completely different from the years of sculpting paper clay and then packaged to appear like a toy figure, these pieces will have its freedom and at the same time be intimate. You’ll have to move in closer to see his objects."

Water Main Breaks At UCLA Makes Huge Joke of Drought In California

Some would call it an assault on how UCLA sees the drought in California. Other would call it a huge waste of water in a time where lawns are becoming deserts. In either case UCLA and Sunset Blvd took on a surreal look with water pouring into campus. Creating an almost idyllic are to cool off in on campus.

Damn, who wouldn't want to go there and see it for themselves.

LA Times breaks down the story

I'm sure some movie makers might think about using the campus as a set after how breathtaking some of the imagery of the event looked.

Mike Tyson Mysteries Comic-Con Trailer

Mike Tyson Mysteries looks like a Venture Bros Clone that uses the stalward idea of making a talking animal drink, nice check you must be getting Norm McDonald. Mike Tyson really voices himself in a modern jab at Mr. T's cartoon and other crappy animations that should have never existed.

The One Up Doesn't Know What Dates Are

The One Up, the brand new arcade/bar/diner is opening up September 14 with a grand opening on the 19th. Someone didn't tell the graphics department on their Facebook page.

The One Up

Of note, the bar isn't part of the 1 up brand from Colorado which uses the number 1 instead of the word one. We have not heard of any pending lawsuits over the use of the name.

Update:

The Facebook page updated with a Sept 19 Grand opening banner and a reminder not to post anything at 2 in the morning. Even though the time of the  incorrect banner post is around midnight.
