Year of the Snake Chinatown
"LA Chinatown kicks off the Year of the Snake celebration at Thien Hau Temple where attendees can experience traditional incense burning, make offerings to deities, watch traditional lion dancers, and witness 500,000 firecrackers in action along with Buddhist and Taoist monks and families of all generations. This ceremony takes place on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 11:00 p.m., the eve of Chinese New Year weekend."

"Ring in the Year of the Snake at the Hammer’s Chinese New Year’s Day festival. Make or decorate your own paper lantern, learn to write Chinese characters, discuss the Los Angeles Chinese food scene with Pulitzer Prize-winning L.A. food critic Jonathan Gold, and enjoy a concert of traditional Chinese music by the Music of China Ensemble of UCLA. Ammo at the Hammer will have a selection of Asian teas and Chinese inspired fare available for purchase."

"Have a wild Valentine's Day at the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens! The adults-only affair features a lighthearted and enlightening talk by actress Joleen Lutz, who is also known for her work as an interpretive naturalist of zoology. Also included are a reception featuring tempting desserts and wines; "animal walk-abouts," which include chats with keepers and the chance to observe small animals up close; and an optional four-course dinner at Reggie's Bistro inside the Zoo. Proceeds from the fund-raiser, the fourth annual, support the Zoo’s mission of wildlife preservation and conservation at the Zoo and around the world."
“Ladies of Animation” Art Show Showcases Female Talent in Animation
Gennie Rim, former artistic manager at Pixar and Disney, picks up her ongoing series centered on the art of animation with a new exhibit, “Ladies of Animation,” underlining the personal work of female artists from major studios including Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks. The Opening Reception will be held on Saturday, February 9th from 6 – 10 p.m at GRspace (114 W. 4th St. Los Angeles, CA 90013). The show runs through March 2nd, 2013.
Featured in the show are: Victoria Ying, Sho Murase, Helen Mingjue Chen, Nicole Mitchell, Clio Chiang, Griselda Sastrawinata, Anna Chambers, Lorelay Bove, Claire Keane, Fawn Veerasunthorn, Brittney Lee, Kendelle Hoyer and Lissa Treiman, and Pamela Tu.
