press release:

Bloom will be the focal point of this summer's 10th anniversary event on Saturday June 23rd from 5 - 8pm. To celebrate this 10th anniversary, the M&A community is hosting a gala birthday party on June 23rd. We are asking inspiring designers to join the celebration by creating a birthday cake that we will raffle off to raise funds to support future M&A projects. Raffle tickets will go for $10/each.
As summer begins, visitors to M&A can expect to see the amazing 'Bloom' installation's skin curl as the outdoor temperatures rise.
Bloom, a project by Doris Sung in collaboration with Ingalill Wahlroos-Ritter and Matthew Melnyk, stitches together material experimentation, structural innovation, and computational form and pattern-making into an environmentally responsive sculpture . Made primarily out of a smart thermobimetal, a sheet metal that curls when heated, the form’s responsive surface shades and ventilates specific areas of the shell as the sun heats up its surface. With the aid of digital softwares, the surface, is made up of approximately 14,000 pieces. Composed of 414 hyperbolic paraboloid-shaped stacked panels, the self-supporting structure challenges the capability of the materials to perform as a shell while also transforming to permit air and light to pass through when temperatures rise. The monocoque form is lightweight and designed to flex.
