Gallery Nucleus is excited to be hosting “SWEET STREETS,” a fanciful exhibition that will take inspiration from the Japanese fashion subculture. Rather than follow trends, the youth of Japan have blazed a fashion movement. By mixing old with the new while customizing and combining the homemade with designer labels, their looks result in the unexpected and avant-garde. Art-inspired fashions and fashion-inspired art is one of the most creative symbiotic relationships of our generation. Co-curated by CARO and sponsored by Hi-Fructose magazine, over 40 artists will contribute to this event in celebrating imagination and originality.Event Features: Free exhibition music samplers to the first 100 attendees. Dress up to receive 15% off select store merchandise. Artist & 'Harajuku' models in attendance. Music from the streets of Tokyo. Free refreshments provided by Kirin Beer & Takara Sake USA Inc. Free snacks served. Admission is free.

SEVENTH MOON, 2008, Lionsgate, 87 min. Director Eduardo Sanchez (THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT) helms his latest unnerving chiller. Melissa and Yul (Amy Smart and Tim Chiou), Americans honeymooning in China, happen upon the exotic "Hungry Ghost" festival that honors spirits in the market of a small town. But as night falls, they find themselves abandoned by their driver in a remote village, and soon realize the legends are all too real. Plunged into an ancient custom they cannot comprehend, the couple must find a way to survive the night of the Seventh Moon. "The other highlight is the creature design. Simple and uncomplicated…From a distance they echo the monsters of THE DESCENT or perhaps the Morlocks of H.G. Wells’ TIME MACHINE -- Fearsome, formidable and ultimately terrifying despite their relative familiarity -- hats off to the FX crew at Spectral Motion for demonstrating that even pasty Asian ghosts can get a startling upgrade given the right light." – BloodyDisgusting.com Discussion following with director Eduardo Sanchez, actress Amy Smart and cast and crew members (TBD).
Cigarettes make it seem just super tasty and filled with tobacco
That is the scariest looking white person ever, I feel this may give the wrong impression about white people to foreigners.
Bourbon, I believe it's just the name, they cookies don't actually have bourbon.
Why you Binch! I'm going to get these next time , Binch!
These strange snack can be found at the Little Tokyo Market Place. Little Tokyo Market Place is located in the Little Tokyo Mall, they do validate if you spend I believe at least 15 dollars. This is a great market place with a huge selection of tasty foreign snacks and new things to try. Service is nice. I just love coming here and trying new stuff. The last sale they had was great I payed 3 bucks for 10 dollars worth of stuff. This may be one of the best markets in the area as it's competition are the two Japanese markets nearby and one on Sawtelle.
If you go back some posts you'll remember I went to the Bioshock Beach Event with Greg De Stefano and got a Arcadia Wine bottle with posters right out of Bioshock. There was a second part to my mission, after finding what was on the beach I had to send photos back of what I found to a Mr. Mark G. Meltzer. Mr. Melzter is the guy asking for help in finding his lost little girl. So I sent the photos and a letter to Mr. Melzter and to my suprise found this Rapture Record at my doorstep. Now if only I had a record player, hmmm ... better head to a museum.
I forgot that Nisei week was partionally sponsored by Kenny G for some reason, I just find his logo or that he has a logo strange. Plus District 9 there.
Here's a quick review of the bakery in Little Tokyo
I'm hungry and I just watched some anime where the Hell do I go. I go here. After seeing a anime character eat something I want to eat it to (hey, hey get your mind out of the gutter) this place has friendly service and cheap, yet good baked goods. Try something new you've only seen in a anime. The store isn't huge and there ain't no sit down room. You should come here grab a treat and walk around or take something good home. Nice selection of different treats, just pop in.The store isn't magical, but if your looking for baked goods in Little Tokyo come here.
Here's some of the booths they had with some nice tees.
These were just some of the festival ornament balls which are called Kusudama hanging of the rafters near the MOCA.
I had a furry funny time. As I ate Octupus balls, bought Japanese snacks that were on sale. Bought Japanese magazines on sale. One dollar each at the Kinokuniya Bookstore. Saw some Sumos and Samurais. Explored more of Little Tokyo
Anyway Nisei week ended today with a eating contest and a rubiks cube challenge, it probably should end with the parade. The Nisei week parade or Tanabata parade, I don't know which for it was never explained well was very fun and I felt a perfect end to Nisei week. Maybe it should be Nisei weekend. Here are some pics and clips of the parade which was funny and fun to watch.
Sadly a few gripos of Nisei week
- parking for the parade is nearly impossible
- they Nisei week website said there would be some sort of anime festival, that didn't exist at all.
if you like the Sumo demonstration definitely check out the Cosplay parade for it's hug ending below
Nisei week continues in little tokyo, I'm sure there's still some fun to be had even though this is the end of the festival. Strangely enough, a gyoza eating contest and a rubiks cube competition are happening. Plenty of great places to eat and explore nearby, so if you missed last weekend come on down.
While checking out Nisei week in Little Tokyo I revisited one of my favorite arcades, Japan Arcade. oh yeah!
This place is so cool the C is a Pac-man. Japan Arcade located on the second floor of the Japanese mall in Little Tokyo called Little Tokyo Shopping Center (well thats redundant) is blazing with fun arcade games to past the time. This arcade has a nice big selection of games to play. Many titles not found in the US are here. Many of the games are straight from Japan so the menus are in Japanese, but who cares when most of those games are light shooters. So just take your gun a blow everyone down. One of them I tried was based on the Lupin the 3rd anime. This was a very strange shooter as it changed from the first level of blowing guys away on a train to shooting rocket missiles on wheels, to shooting through glass at a jewelery store and then sucking up diamonds, until I finally died shooting police cars. It was still very different and strange and thats what you want in a Japanese arcade or any arcade. They also had a police woman trainer game I didn't try that had way to much writing on it
The best game you probably haven't tried it Taiko Drum Master. This is my favorite game they have. This is a big arcade machine with two big drums on it that you have to hammer away on in touch with the beat with drum sticks. It's really fun to team up with a friend and complete a J-pop song. In Japan these machines were updated with new music, but here you only have a choice of about 70 songs. I actually owned the Region 1 ps2 version that came with a drum controller. I rocked out to the dragonball theme song. This is the best arcade machine to try out while your there.
The arcade has all the old stuff to like my old favorite Virtual On, I know it's available for 360 now, but it's just better to play at the arcade.
The arcade also contains a samurai game where you use a sword controller and Ninja Assault which is a Ninja shooter and is very strange.
This arcade has a lot of sit down machines, they even have the new Street Fighter 4 in a sit down style booth. They also have Marvel vs Capcom 2 and other common titles like Metal Slug. I think they have a funny strip video game, but the girls strip to bikinis. They also have one of those fully interactive Dance Dance machines where you have to move you whole body now. Arms and legs, it looks weird. I didn't list all the different machines, so go try it out and I'm sure they'll have at least one machine you like.
-The place seemed quite clean when I went and all the machines seemed to be working. Parking is easy, there are many lots nearby and the mall has it's own parking lot.
-The only problem with this place is that it can be really empty. I think a lot of people were there the day I came because it was Nisei week. Others day I've gone only one other person or no one has been there.
-The arcade is in the same mall with plenty of places to eat and even a supermarket. Try some Japanese snacks like I did. It's a upcoming review on my site.
Some sort of memorial or monument in Little Tokyo. It's funny because it's right next to where the held the Street Fighter 4 release party. They could have used it as the game motto or something like that. Anway Nisei week had a big turnout Sat and Sunday. The area near the Japanese museum had a lot of attention. The museum was also free that day and they had a luncheon as seen below.
They had a stage open with demonstartion of Samurais, J-pop music and stand-up.
Sadly the Furries showed up and confused people, many people don't know who or what they are
What a great start to Nisei week in Little Tokyo. I just happened to start my day with a Samurai exhibition. The Samurai history lesson was a great joy to listen to because of the British translator. It was like watching a PBS special in real life.
Next up was the Sumo demonstration. The Sumos were the former and current North American champion. They showed of some good moves then has some play fights with kids. I was really impressed, I would love to see a real Sumo fight in a nice arena, and the whole throwing of salt to purify the ring start. They should have a Sumo fight at the Staples center for one night only or something.
Here we have a small portion of the tanabata festival ornament balls which are called Kusudama.
Here's just a small portion of the crowd from Saturday.
On Sawtelle Kid Robots throwing a art show Saturday then the next day there having a yard sale.
Ripped write of their page " Sunday, Giant Robot will be hosting its first-ever yard sale, which will be loaded with DVDs, CDs, VHS tapes, books, toys, clothing, and other artifacts, extras, and mementos from Giant Robot's past. Longtime magazine readers and store customers should expect to see some familiar pieces and nice surprises, and yard sale aficionados won't be disappointed."
